The tradition of sand pattern sprinkling in Kuyavia

Techniques of sand sprinkling

White sand was used to sprinkle patterns and it was brought most often from the so-called piaśnica, which is a place where sand was dug. Sand had to be dry, loose and fine which is why it required a special treatment. It was dried and sieved. Sometimes, in order to make it contrast better against the ground it was bleached with lime. The technique of pattern sprinkling depended on personal preferences. The easiest and most common method was sprinkling sand from a closed hand with sand drawn from the apron tied in the front or from a small bucket. For that purpose the artists used also a funnel, a bottle, a metal cup with holes or a lipped jar.
